It's all in the shapes

We start with the U.S.A as a Country and notice it’s unique shape. Pay close attention to what it looks like on a map.  We then look at it’s smaller individual sections considered to be all of the 50 States. Each State has a unique shape too. We then pick one of these States and look closely at it’s shape. We then associate that shape to the outrageous scenario that reminds us in some way of the name of the State and it’s Capital.

Example

Missouri - Jefferson City

If we look closely at this State we see that it’s shape looks like a big elephant’s head. This is a mommy elephant named Miss Youri. “Miss Youri” has a young son named Jeff. This mommy elephant is sad because her son Jeff wants to leave her and move to the big city to join the circus.

To remember this State we recall the shape looking like a big elephant’s head. We recall that this is a mommy elephant named Miss Yuri. “Miss Yuri” sounds like the name of the State, Missouri. The mommy elephant has a son, whose name is Jeff and who wants to move to the city. Jeff-son-city, reminds us of the Capital, Jefferson City.

It's that simple

Now that you have read Missouri’s shape reminder you will most likely see the “mommy elephant” every time you look at the shape of the State on a map.  You will remember her name, Miss Youri and Jeff her son wanting to go to the city. This is all you will need to recall this particular State and Capital.

All of the other States follow the same pattern and are equally as fun in trying to remember their stories. You can now easily come up with your own scenarios and characters for all the other states.  Figure out what the shape looks like to you and use your imagination to associate a good anchor. The other option of course is to get this book where all of the associations are done for you and you can get right into learning! Get right to the fun using the book, Shaping the Country.

Learning

To obtain knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught.

We remember things by association

Every piece of information in our memory is connected to other pieces in some way or another. For example, if you were given the word “Dog”, you most likely think of a fuzzy cute pet. What if you were once attacked by a crazed pooch? You then remember the animal in a different light but nevertheless you “remember.”  We recall things based on the associations we have made through our experience.

To improve on our memory we have to change how we make associations. To make these associations more memorable we need to make them outrageous, bizarre, funny, ridiculous, emotional, exaggerated or just plain out of the ordinary. This way, they will get cemented into our memory.

In this book, Shaping the Country we help you in making the, “special” associations so that you can more easily remember all of the U.S.A’s States and Capitals.
